Pony rugzak vs. fietstas: waarom je pony toch liever het echte werk draagt

Pony backpack vs. bike bag: why your pony would rather carry the real thing

“I’ll just use a pannier on my pony...” – why that’s not quite the same

“Cute idea, that pony backpack. But uh... I just use a bike pannier as a pack saddle. Works just as well, right?”

Totally get it. I used to think the same. Toss on a saddle pad, strap it down, tie the pannier on, and off you go. Easy, right?

That is, until I started looking into it a bit more.

How a pony actually prefers to carry weight

During my years working as a saddle fitter (over 10 years!), one thing became very clear: proper weight distribution is crucial for your pony’s comfort and health. When a pony’s back is loaded the wrong way, it can lead to discomfort, rub marks, and even injuries.

If you want your horse or pony to carry a pack saddle, the weight should be spread over the long back muscles — the area between the shoulder blade and the last rib. That’s the part of the back best equipped to carry a load.

What don’t they love? Pressure on the loins or spine, where the bone sits just under the skin. That’s where rubs, pressure sores, and yep — grumpy ponies — happen quickly.

So what’s the problem with a pannier?

A pannier is great... on a bike. But on a pony? Not quite ideal. They're simply not designed to distribute pressure properly or to keep the spine free. Even if you add a fluffy pad or extra blanket, the problem stays the same.

It’s just not made to sit on a pony’s back — which means it’s much more likely to slide, rub, and cause discomfort.

That’s why we created the Equi-Pack pony backpack

Because we want ponies to come along on adventures — comfortably.

The Equi-Pack pony backpack:

  • Keeps the spine free

  • Distributes the weight where it belongs

  • Moves with your pony (it’s treeless!)

Whether you're heading into the woods, on a pony sleepover, or just exploring the fields — your pony can carry their gear safely and comfortably.

Cheaper… or better?

Sure, a pannier is cheaper. But when it comes to your pony’s comfort and health, a purpose-built pony backpack is the smarter choice.

You don’t need fancy luxury — just something that works for your pony. And that? Totally worth it. 🐴💛
